Unfortunately, while that album did spawn the incredible title track, Mariah's label Columbia weren't too impressed with the record's chart performance. Therefore, when it came to recording her follow-up, Emotions, in 1991, Mariah was insistent that she hold more creative control over the musical direction. While Mariah Carey found success with her 1990 self-titled debut album, critics were distracted by the alleged poor songwriting on the album.
